Sick of renumbering invoices by hand?
We're building a free invoicing tool that remembers your business details and clients, auto-numbers each invoice, and tells you which ones are still unpaid. Launching soon — leave your email and you'll get it first.
One email when we launch. Unsubscribe anytime. No spam, no selling your address.
What a UK invoice must include
- The word "invoice" and a unique, sequential invoice number
- Your business name, address and contact details (and company number + registered office if you're a limited company)
- The client's name and address
- Invoice date, a clear description of goods or services, and the amount(s) charged
- If you're VAT-registered: your VAT number, the VAT rate and the VAT amount shown separately, and the tax point (supply date) if it differs from the invoice date
Do I need to charge VAT?
Only if you're VAT-registered. Registration is compulsory once your taxable turnover passes the HMRC threshold (£90,000 as of 2024) — below that it's optional. If you're not registered, don't add VAT and don't show a VAT line at all.
Sole trader vs limited company invoices
A sole trader invoices under their own name (or trading name) — see the self-employed invoice template. A limited company must also show its full registered name, company number and registered office address.
