What a UK invoice must include

Do I need to charge VAT?

Only if you're VAT-registered. Registration is compulsory once your taxable turnover passes the HMRC threshold (£90,000 as of 2024) — below that it's optional. If you're not registered, don't add VAT and don't show a VAT line at all.

Sole trader vs limited company invoices

A sole trader invoices under their own name (or trading name) — see the self-employed invoice template. A limited company must also show its full registered name, company number and registered office address.
